The second movement, as it were, provides a three-dimensional musical portrait: the tutti violins with their tiny tone steps illustrate the almost imperceptible movement of rustling leaves, the viola reflects the barking shepherd dog, and the gentle lullaby of dosing shepherds can be recognised in the solo violins. This allows us to see exactly the bars in which the three solo violin imitate birds singing, how the spring murmur, the air rustles and the thunder rolls. To eliminate all doubt about what he wanted to 'paint', Vivaldi wrote letters at the edge of individual episodes of the poems and had them appear in the score of each violin concerto. Chirping of the birds and zephyr rush bring relief, but thereafter a violent north wind sets in, the shepherd begins his complaints but they are drowned by the awful noise of the storm, which continues until the end of the movement.
